Photograph Assignment: Abysmal Land
Abysmal Land
Upon entering the park, you are greeted by Telephone People. They are human, all except for the heads. Some have phones for faces and some wear them on their heads. The Telephone People greet you to let you into the park. They don’t speak, only dial the numbers on their phones. If you hear a ringing, you may enter on the third ring. If you may not enter, the phones make a piercing beeping until you are escorted off the premise. Those who are allowed to enter are selected at random.
The park rests on top of a dirt lot. The park gives off a slight green and dusty aura. It sits at the edge of a lake. The structures looked temporary, like a fair, as if it could be packed up in an instant.
A broken down 1920s ford sits in lake. There’s no passenger door or windows and it’s more rusted than not. It’s half flooded. Though it looks as if there’s no protection, you can still breath. It takes you under the lake, weaving through tufts of seaweed, occasionally getting caught.
The Wheel Bumpers’ line usually stretches the entire perimeter of the park and takes ten hours to get to. Riders sit in a giant tire wheel with a steering apparatus. The wheels are placed on a narrow strip, 10 feet off the ground. The objective is to stay on the strip and knock your opponent off. Losing may or may not result in death.
The park is populated with face characters. The most popular ones are the Ratz. They have the bodies of people, dressed in worn clothing, with the head of a rat. They scurry around on all fours, occasionally stopping to smell the people. If pet, they will bite. Please do not pet the rats. At the top of every hour, they stand up on their two feet, and scream in unison.
Eyeball Men are people dressed in black suits and dress shoes with white ties. Instead of heads, they have large eyeballs sitting on their necks. They are hard to find, often hiding. You can catch a glimpse of them, but will never see them directly unless you turn around and there is a parting in the crowds. They move as if their limbs are broken and always retain eye contact. Many think their existence is a rumor.
The park closes at 2am. At precisely 1:59am, the Telephone People appear from all the corners of the park and beep together until guests leave with hands on their ears. No one remembers Abysmal Land as a place, only hazy memories.
